Crum led the blindfolded man into the car the waitress had exchanged for him and drove for around forty minutes, then guided him out of the car into a building with narrow staircases and many steps.
A piano was being played most beautifully. From the slight echo, Piggott thought the sound was coming from a large empty room or hall. He didnât recognise the tune, but the music was pleasant enough.
Crum knocked on the door.
The piano stopped and a voice called, âCome in.â
Crum led Arthur into a darkened room. âIâve got Arthur Piggott here, boss.â
âRight, Mr Crum. Well, sit him down somewhere.â
Piggott heard the scrape of a chair on a wooden floor close behind him. Then he was pushed backwards into it.
âThatâs better. Now me and you can have a little chat. I had a little chat with your father about the money you owed me and he said he would let me have it. But he never showed and then sadly he died. So sad. I donât like it when people die. I donât like going to funerals. Now, Mr Piggott, we donât want anything like that happening to you, do we?â
Piggott didnât say anything.
The boss said, âPardon?â and waited. Then, âI said we donât want anything like that happening to you, Mr Piggott, do we?â
âNo. What is it exactly youâre wanting, Mr . . .â
âAh good. Iâm glad youâre receiving me. At the last reckoning it was £13,000. With interest for the delay in settling, say £3,000, and this eveningâs cost of getting you out, say £20,000, I reckon it must be around £36,000. Being a reasonable man, if it is paid in the next couple of days, Iâll settle for £35,000.â
Piggottâs mouth opened wide. âWow! Thatâs a lot of money.â
âYouâre not making the sort of noises I like to hear, Mr Piggott. I think youâre forgetting that the day you get this moolah from your ma, pay off this debt, youâll be as free as a bird. The sky will be yours. The sea and the entire earth will be yours. You can start afresh in any part of the world. Iâve saved you the emptiness, the indignity and the emotions of being held as a criminal awaiting prison. How do you put a value on that? If it was my destiny to receive even a night in prison, I would give almost all I possess to avoid it. And you are looking at years. Two years. Five years. Ten years. It goes on. Itâs your life theyâre taking from you. Iâve saved you from all that, and £35,000 is cheap considering what youâre getting. I donât think, Mr Piggott, that you fully understand the mathematics of this situation. The costs of running my organisation can be likened to that of running a university. You see, if we use education as our currency â well, education donât come free. I mean, you donât get born with education. Oh no. I mean . . . say your father is
